Does The Sony FS7 Support HDR?

Sony’s position is confusing enough but what do other companies think? Atomos and Blackmagic Design [that I know of] offer a range of products that support HDR production and naturally the question arises of what cameras these products support. When these guys are asked clarity ensues – of course the FS7 supports HDR. As indeed do all cameras that support Log or Raw recording. Even Sony employees or ICE sometimes claim that the FS7 supports HDR.

There is another view of what HDR means, regarding it as a process or workflow and camera choice is somewhat irrelevant as HDR is really a post-production activity. This approach makes a lot of sense as the proliferating HDR subsets will ensure that multiple versions will be required for delivery.  However all the information required for production of HDR content needs to come from the camera. Sony S-Log variants seem to be more than adequate to contribute to a HDR process when defined in that very limited definition. The issue is what about the other aspects of Rec.2020 ? Most notable is the color gamut. or range of colors the camera can record. I have heard that the FS7 cannot produce the full Rec.2020 color range and this is probably why Sony are reluctant to make an HDR claim for the FS7.

In summary, I do believe the FS7 can contribute to HDR workflows provided your task is not to show the full color gamut.
