The Media Production Show 2017 – “Mumblegate”

In the audience was a higher up from Directors UK, they were standing by their director and were rebuffing all attempts to blame the director. Again stating the show was produced to professional standards.

So there we go, it wasn’t the sound department and it wasn’t the filming department so we were all left with question, who’s fault was it? Perhaps it was the Editor?

They presented a demo of a set of dialogue recorded very badly, with the last in the sequence actually being audible. They then played that same set  again and you can  hear all the dialogue. This was a remarkable demonstration of how an Editor that listens to a sequence many times can actually hear a mumbled sequence as being high quality.

So nobody is to blame! At least yet. With everyone defending their corner until there is a confrontational forum we may never know. There was a lot of discussion and I’m sure there will be a lot more.

This author edits on the latest Premiere Pro and they have a loudness radar controls so there is no excuse for (my) bad sound. Even if it sounds correct you can visually see what the loudness is across a sequence. Similarly Vegas has had a loudness radar. They both integrate a third-party control. So it seems there is a step missing in the post production process.

Surely they can get an older person to watch.
