Stacey Dooley at the Factual Festival 2018

Brian asked about the interview with the EDL, some English extremist group. She agreed that there were consequences to this, people knew where her relatives still lived and they made threats towards them. Nevertheless she still preserved with the interview as it would be hypocritical to report on the violence in other parts of world and yet pretend there were no problems at home.

Tracey gave some insights into how they gain “access”. Working in the philippines, her and friend Joyce (director) met an american investigator (from Homeland Security) in a hotel. He was investigating “sex for sale, mothers offering their children”. He was pretending to be a potential client for these services so that he could identify people doing it.  Joyce stayed in touch with him for a couple years. The BBC were reluctant at first to fund a documentary on such a sensitive subject, but they did. She also pointed out that it can be challenging to criticise people driven by the tyranny of circumstance. At the time of writing this episode is on YouTube but I won’t post a link as it is not clear it is the BBC posting it. The episode saw children being taken from their mother to take their chances in the Philippine care system.
