The BBC are looking big important stories that speak to the nation. They will get their place in the all important 9pm slot. Real life drama is the most important quantity. Where the audience can see themselves, it does really big numbers. BBC 2 doc ‘the School’ is one of the most important programs done over the past few years. BBC 2 looks at the world as it is now. Not walking away from that. Programs are meant to explain the world, more than you get in news. BBC will experiment with Tone. Always looking for things that are different.
The Panel were asked to talk about their ‘Slate’ and how they are innovating in different ways.
Guy says C5 are all about breadth. [I always mention C5 as one channel but of course it is multiple]. They like Big Innovative Films but need to temper that with things that are popular. They are looking for series that score at the ratings but feel edgy and new. They don’t have the budget of C4 but still want to be innovative. The Live show they did was well received. It was put at the 10 pm slot where they felt they could inhabit. They will likely commission some more of those.
