ARRI exhibited at the Procam and Televisual sponsored Media Technology Day (Oct. 31 2019). The film camera [above] was mainly to support sponsor CINELAB. ARRI showed ALEXA Mini LF & Signature Prime lenses on Trinity and SRH-3.
The new LF format came about as Netflix stated to define the size of 4K for their service. Although the ARRI offerings were almost 4K (or UHD) and possibly gave better pictures than other cameras that met the 4K requirement, Netflix stuck to their guns and you had to have UHD worth of pixels. ARRI have always had the ALEXA 65 which easily met the requirement but it remains a rental only Camera, which with the appropriate lens, put it beyond the budget of most TV and Indie productions. The ALEXA Mini LF puts ARRI right back in that in that market. Follow the Netflix requirements.
The ARRI Trinity Stabilizer featured heavily. They had someone demonstrating it and I wish I had paid more attention to it. They had a Trinity operator, Charlie Rizek, on the panel and he worked with Roger Deakins on the new movie “1917”.
The main part of the panel was the exhibition a couple of competition winning shorts that had to feature the Trinity. This competition was by ARRI in conjunction with Directors UK Challenge Trinity.
The ARRI Panel wrapped up showing a Roger Deakins short Roger Deakins on his journey to ARRI’s large format. This is available on YouTube if you follow the link.
