Media Technology Day 2019

An interesting instant audience survey revealed that not a lot of people are interested in the DPP yet – however I suspect this is due to it being the domain of a specialized department in those organizations.  The BBC revealed that the first release of Seven Worlds, One Planet was the first program delivered in the  DPP’s  AS11 X1 format.  They had to go from an IMF to AS11 X1.

This is not totally surprising as the BBC are major contributors to the DPP. AS11 X1 is designed for delivery of UHD (4K) format. This is expected to be a standard for the BBC in their landmark productions. The big advantage is that if they need to fix the program  they can make a small change to the XML and that change is rolled out to all co-pro partners with a minimal change. The BBC may not even have to take delivery of an AS11 HD, it will be derived from an HLG Master.  HLG is a BBC, and NHK, sponsored High Dynamic Range (HDR) format that can be received by sets supporting that format AND SDR sets. They are not doing any BT.709 in post-production. They are only doing HLG in post-production and are using LUTs to convert that to BT.709 for SDR Broadcast. The next delivery in their landmark series will be IMF only.

HLG has been previously distributed by the BBC NHU on iPlayer. You need an HLG equipped TV, new equipment in the UK often supports HLG. It should be Internet connected and be able to play content from iPlayer (you have to sign up).
