The Future of TV

The rise of other means of distribution, e.g. Netflix or Amazon or the OTT and Streamers has created a range of new opportunities. These organizations do present new opportunities and new problems. There has been a tacit understanding of when UK broadcasters will remit funds for work you have completed but the new channels may well have a different view. For example they may not want to pay you until the production is complete. The challenge you face is that Talent, Post Production etc will not wait that long.

Many firms run into similar problems. Using a “Factor” is a well known technique where you can borrow money against your Invoices. Of course they are not cheap and they do not share the risk (Barclays will probably not either).

There are changing business practices to deal with as well. In the past UK Broadcasters have paid once the Production is complete. The newer Broadcasters may estimate the “shelf life” of a Program. Perhaps that may be 3 years, they may want to amortize that cost over the three years. This practice can be difficult to deal with.

The advantage of the Barclays Media Team is that they understand the Media Industry and can advance you development funds to bridge the gap. They do this by understanding the credit worthiness of Broadcasters and so they are able to take a position on whether the Producer will eventually get paid.

The author briefly mentioned this with Lloyds Bank. They have the standard set of business finance options but offered nothing specific to Media as Barclays have done.
